Prandelli: We were very tired

http://www.goallog.com/Italy manager Cesare Prandelli says his players 'were very tired' against Spain in the UEFA EURO 2012 final on Sunday night.

The Azzurri were beaten 4-0 by Spain to win the Euro Cup back-to-back on Sunday night.

Prandelli said: 'It’s been an extraordinary tournament in any case.

'They were physically fresher than us and we had already given everything we had. Against players like these it’s difficult to recover. Our approach to the game wasn’t wrong, but we realised immediately that we had to try to contain them because we were very tired. This meant we became unbalanced, as ours is a team that has to be in peak fitness to play at its best.

'We must develop further, but we have to come into these challenges with the right timescales so that the players can recover the energies they have expended over a whole league season.

'The only regrets that we can have are about our injuries, but we were facing the world champions after all. We had some chances to get back into it in the second-half but then we ran out of energy. Napolitano’s letter and the plaudits were not a distraction for us.'
