Sir Alex: We really defended poorly

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has blamed his side's defeat in the hands of Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on poor defence.

Spurs left-back Jan Vertonghen opened scoring in the second minute before Gareth Bale extended the lead just after the half-hour mark. United rallied in the second half and scored twice in three minutes, but Clint Dempsey’s goal between those two strikes proved decisive.

Sir Alex told ESPN: 'It was quite a game . We never started in the first half. It was a poor start to the game and they got a little break with a deflected goal. We really defended poorly.

'From there we were playing against the wind, really, until half-time came along and we were able to change things a little bit.

'In the second half we were fantastic. We should have got something from the game. We were very unlucky.

'I felt we should have dealt with [that situation] better. It was a bad break for us after getting one back. If we’d have kept it at 2-1 for a few minutes we would have won the match.'

Babel: I'm very pleased to be back at Ajax

Dutch forward Ryan Babel says he is pleased to return to Aajx.

The former Liverpool and Hoffenheim forward believes he has a lot to offer his former club.

In an interview with FIFA.com, he said: 'I'm very pleased to be back at Ajax, the club where it all started for me. It was definitely a dream to return to the club one day.

'I’ve signed a one-year deal because I've analysed the past and seen that long contracts can disable you from making a decision if you want to make one. If I have a good year and Ajax are satisfied with me, we can always discuss a longer stay.

'Ajax have won the title the last two seasons and this season again we have a good squad to compete. I'm confident we can be competition for the other teams as well. Not much has changed since I left, only a lot of new faces obviously and a whole new staff.'

Qantas Joeys looking forward to Iranian contest

Qantas Joeys coach Alistair Edwards says his team is looking forward to playing the host nation, IR Iran, in the quarter-finals of the AFC U-16 Championship 2012 on Sunday in Tehran, with not only a berth in the semi-finals on offer, but also a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates next year.

Both teams are undefeated going into the game and the local media are calling for the Iranian public to fill the stadium to watch what promises to be the best game of the tournament so far.

Coach Edwards said: 'We are all excited about taking on the host nation, there is an air of expectancy around Iran as everyone has memories of the 1997 world cup qualification game's between the two countries.

'The boys have been playing well, we have developed a strong focus and belief in the process rather than just concentrating on the result, on Sunday this will be no different.

'There have been times when this has been a challenge due to the direct nature of some or our opponents as well as the occasion, but the pleasing aspect has been that with a few gentle reminders, we have stuck to our process and associated team tasks and the success so far has been the by-product.

In the other quarter-finals Iraq will play Kuwait, Korea Republic will meet Uzbekistan and Japan will take on Syria.

Mourinho: Terry is not a racist

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho says John Terry is 'not a racist.

The former Chelsea manager believes Blues captain deserves punishment if he did abused QPR's Anton Ferdinand.

The Whites manager said: 'He's not racist, that's 100%. Probably he had a racist comment or attitude against an opponent. Sometimes in football we do things the wrong way.

'If he had that reaction he should pay but please don't say he's a racist.'

The Chelsea captain was given a four-match ban and fined by the FA.

Heskey arrives in Australia; raring to go

Newcastle Jets marquee signing Emile Heskey has arrived at Sydney Airport.

The former England international was received by Jets CEO Robbie Middleby and friend Michael Bridges, while a large contingent of media and some excited Jets fans were also in attendance at the International Arrivals Terminal.

The former Liverpool striker said: 'It was a bit of a long flight, but I’m finally here and I’m raring to go.

'I’ve heard a lot about my teammates… Bridgey has told me quite a bit about the league and the team.

'I spoke to Robbie Fowler and he’s told me a lot about the league and everything as well.

'I’m just raring to go really. I’m looking forward to meeting the lads, having a bit of a training run with them and seeing how things go.

'Training on your own is different to actually having match fitness. In the UK I’ve only had 45 minutes in a training game, so I’ll need some games, but I’ll soon get that fitness.

'We’ll have to see how training goes because I heard it’s a bit hot out here. It’s different to Manchester where it’s raining everyday. I should be OK, fingers crossed.

'When Robbie flew that long flight over to see me and basically sell the club to me, it was a nice gesture from them.

'Basically they just told me it was a family club. I started at Leicester and it was a family run club. Everyone knows everyone, everyone works hard for each other and he just said it’s the same thing (in Newcastle).

'It’s like going back to the beginning, but somewhere else.

'I’ll just take it game by game and see how it goes. I want to do really well and hit the ground running.

'I’ve always looked at silverware. Wherever I’ve gone I’ve tried to win silverware. It’s something I came into the game at a young age wanting to do, so why not (in Newcastle).'

Heskey may feature Jets' Round 1 clash with Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium on October 7.

Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson said: 'I am absolutely delighted to get a left sided player and to get the calibre of Ryo right before the kick-off is fantastic.

'I had no hesitation in signing him. I knew straight away from his first training session with us that I wanted to keep him.

'He played two fantastic pre-season games in Melbourne last week and out of the seven goals we scored, he was involved in four of them and scored one himself, which was great.'

Nagai, who has captained Japan at U-19 level and played 25 games for Osaka said he was excited to join Perth.

Nagai said: 'I am very happy.

'My first impressions of Australia have been very nice. The people are very kind, and outside of Football, there is also a lot of lovely nature.

'Everyone has been very positive accepting me.

Nagai will who has been given no.12 is already aware of the importance of next week’s match against Brisbane Roar.

'I have seen a replay of the Grand Final and now I want to contribute next Sunday and help Perth Glory get a better result than the last game.

'I am really looking forward to the match and hope I can score a goal and give my best to Perth Glory.'

Kosmina: Van Dijk isn't going anywhere

Adelaide United coach John Kosmina has dismissed speculations striker Sergio van Dijk is about leaving the club for his adopted country, Indonesia.

Last Thursday the Reds issued a statement that they had approved a request from Van Dijk to spend time in Indonesia until the following Monday to address some personal family matters.

Van Dijk's request came just hours after being left on the bench and making a late appearance in United's 2-2 draw with FC Bunyodkor in the AFC Champions League quarter-final first leg clash at Hindmarsh Stadium.

The Dutch forward's decision to depart Adelaide on compassionate leave added to lingering speculation which first gained momentum earlier this year, that the 30-year-old was ready to call time on his five-year association with Australian football.

Speaking on Wednesday, Kosmina said: 'Serge isn't going anywhere ... he only went (to Indonesia) to see his mum and dad, and he was quite happy to do that.'

Adelaide midfielder Dario Vidosic wasn't so reassuring of his team-mate's future.

He said: 'We hope he stays ... I'm not too sure what exactly is going on but I think he's enjoying his time here.

'It's always frustrating as a footballer when you're not in the team but he's working really hard and today he gave it everything.

'We know he is a quality player and that when he is on (the pitch) he is always creating problems.

'It's a very long season, injuries do happen and sometimes you have to switch the shape up ... but he's a very important player and we hope he does stay.'

Dynamo Kyiv appoint Blokhin

FC Dynamo Kyiv have appointed Oleh Blokhin in place of sacked Yuri Semin.

Blokhin who made his name at the Russian side has promised to return them 'to their former glory'.

Oleh Blokhin will remain in charge of Ukraine for next month's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Montenegro.

Kyiv-born Blokhin, 59, has signed a four-year contract with the club.

Yuri Semin was fired on Monday following a 4-1 Ukrainian Cup exit to FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

According to Dynamo's agreement with the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU), Blokhin will only give up his national team role after facing Moldova on 12 October and Montenegro four days later, having drawn their opening Group H qualifier 1-1 in England.

Blokhin said: 'Last night I had almost no sleep. Dynamo's president gave me quite a late call, and I had to think about everything. This is a huge responsibility. I know what is to work with the club. It's not a national team, you have to be at the training base every day, sometimes even for 24 hours, trying to return Dynamo to their former glory.'

Blokhin, who played as a striker at Dynamo in the 1970s and 1980s, added: 'We have tough matches ahead of us: against Zorya Luhansk, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Metalist Kharkiv in the league, as well as home tie versus Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League. The team has to wake up. We can't just suffer one 4-1 defeat after another – it's too much for our club.'

Platini pushes for winter World Cup

UEFA president Michel Platini says he will push for the 2022 World Cup to be staged during the European winter for the first time.

The move would require all major European Leagues to take a month-long winter break.

The former French international told the Evening Standard on Tuesday: 'I hope it will be held in winter. We have to go to Qatar when it is good for everybody to participate. What is better for the fans?

'In 10 years we can manage to decide how we can postpone the season for one month.

January is difficult for the World Cup because you have the Winter Olympic Games. If we stop from November 2 to December 20, it means, instead of finishing in May, we stop in June. It is not a big problem. It is for the good of the World Cup, the most important competition in the world.'

Platini voted for Qatar to get the 2022 World Cup in preference to England and was also supported Russia being awarded the 2018 tournament.

'I voted for Qatar because it was time to go to a country in that part of the world. They bid five times.'

Vidic out for two months

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic will be out of action for two months after undergoing knee surgery.

The defender has had a meniscus operation on his right knee.

The Serbian defender was left out of United's 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday.

A United club statement said: 'Sir Alex (Ferguson), as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem.'

Vidic joins Phil Jones and Chris Smalling on the list of injured players.

Grant: John Terry is no racist

Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant says John Terry is not a 'racist'.

Grant has questioned the charge of the Football Association on Chelsea captain.

Terry has repeatedly denies the allegation of using 'abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour' towards Anton Ferdinand in a game against QPR on 23 October, 2011.

Terry and Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck have arrived at Wembley for the second day of the disciplinary panel hearing.

On 13 July, 2012, Westminster Magistrates' Court cleared the former England captain of making a racist insult to Ferdinand.

Grant said: 'Nobody thinks John Terry is a racist. The FA need to leave it.

'I think the message was clear and I don't think they need to charge him. For the FA, the more important thing is the message that it will not have racism in sport.

'One thing I must say about JT is that he's not a racist, that's for sure. He's a good man.

'He respects everybody, he's good with people and I was very surprised that people thought bad things about him.'

Gerrard: Suarez deserved penalty against United

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and defender Glen Johnson believe Premiership referees are no more fair to the Luiz Suarez.

The Uruguayan striker who was booked for diving in Liverpool's game against Aston Villa on 7 April and Sunderland on 15 September 2012.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez described the 25-year-old striker as an 'artist at getting free kicks'.

Suarez had a penalty appeal turned down in Liverpool's 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

Gerrard said: 'It's down to referees to not judge him. I think even when Luis does get blatant penalties, now he doesn't get them.'

'If it's not a penalty, don't give him one but if it's clear give it.'

Johnson added: 'Referees have to forget about who they are looking at and not let the past affect their decision.'

The defender conceded the match-winning penalty at Anfield on Sunday after Antonio Valencia went down in the area and accused the United winger of cheating.

'Reputations go in front of people at times and because Valencia is not a known diver that is why he got the decision.

'I almost guarantee if it was exactly the same situation and it was Luis and not Valencia then it wouldn't be a penalty. It is cheating at the end of the day, that's what people call it.'

Utaka: I feel comfortable in China

Dalian Aerbin striker Peter Utaka says life in China is 'enjoyable'.

The Nigerian striker has scored 16 goals in 23 appearances since joining the club which makes him second in the league's goalscoring chart.

Utaka said: 'Everything here is enjoyable in China. I feel comfortable about the life here and I appreciate the help from everyone around me - my coach, team-mates, supporters etc. I hope my mum will come here to join me next season.

'As for John, we’ve chatted much about the Chinese league via phone and so it is also possible for him to move here.

'It is not about the family reunion but goalscoring work. John is a good player and he can prove that with any team.

'John is two years older than me so he started a bit earlier. Even then he showed he is very talented in the game but when I started playing I quickly caught up with him.

'To be honest the level of competition in the C-League was well beyond my expectations and the players here are of good quality. The attack is more pacy here and the defence tough. I had to work hard in both training and playing as I tried to adapt to the style quickly.'

Walcott: I want to be an Arsenal legend

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott insists his contractual dispute with the Emirates side is not about money but playing in his favoured position as a striker.

Walcott told ESPN: 'I want to be an Arsenal legend. Thierry joined the club when he was 22 and I want to become an Arsenal legend like him, playing up front as well, which is a big factor for me. I've played on the right wing and had the opportunity to play up front a bit more so I think it's about time.'

The 23-year-old has refused to sign a new five-year deal worth £75,000 a week. His current contract ends at the end of the season.

It was reported the forward was asking for £100,000 a week, but he said: 'That speculation on the money side of it has never been me. That's not me. I'm not the sort of person who's influenced by money. I always make my decisions based on football and only football.

'Hopefully, something can be sorted out. I'll just wait for the club to get back to us now and go from there.

'It's a slow process. My last contract took over six months to happen. Hopefully, it can be sorted out. I've never said I wanted to go, I've always wanted to stay.

'It's one of those things that happens in the game. If it comes to it, if the club had to sell me, I'd be disappointed but, like I said, hopefully something can be sorted.'

The club have not announced a replacement for Semin.

The 65-year-old Russian managed Dynamo Kiev from 2007 to 2009 and returned to the club in late 2010.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew believes the retirement of Chelsea captain John Terry from international football is a huge loss to England.

John Terry who played 78 times for England announced his retirement from international football on Sunday.

Pardew said: 'I just know for the manager of England, it's a blow because he is a great player and the pool isn't great for English players at the moment and the team. That's the tough end for us, but that is a personal decision John has made.'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes his side 'luck will change'.

The Reds lost 1-2 to Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

Rodgers said: 'I remember last year Arsenal didn't get off to a great start. We are seeing some positive moments. I have got great confidence, the group have been absolutely fantastic. We are all behind it. Very soon our luck will change.

'We are bitterly disappointed with the result, I thought the best team lost. Of what we could control I thought the players and performance level was outstanding.'

Heung Min Son: I am very pleased with this win

Hamburger SV forward Heung Min Son says he is 'very pleased' with his side's 3-2 against Borussia Dortmund.

The 20-year-old South Korean said: 'I didn't play very well in our first few games, yet the coach still kept his faith in me and I wanted to thank him for that with my celebration.

'I couldn't be any happier. I am very, very pleased with this win. I had a good feeling before the game because we had nothing to lose, but it is simply incredible!

'We've had a tough time and so we have got to remain cautious. We just have to carry on giving it our all and play in Gladbach like we did against Dortmund. It's given us a lot of confidence.'

Cassio: Good coaches have come to Australia

Adelaide United defender Cassio says he is 'happy to be involved' in development of Australia football.

The Brazilian said: 'From the first step into the country, especially in Adelaide, I had a great feeling that I would do well here and stay here for longer, because I only signed for one year and an option for more.

'I had a feeling I would stay more than one year; I’ve been here five-and-a-half years now and became an Australian citizen. It’s pretty weird sometimes when I think about it but it’s very nice to see that happen for my family.

'The football was a lot different from what I was used to. In South America you have a lot of the ball and play a lot more football, you don’t have much physical part of the game as we do here.

'It was physical but just for the first two months and after that I wanted to win in Australia so whatever came to me was easy because of that hunger to stay here and do my best for the club.

'South American and Brazilian football is very different but if you ask me today I would say I’d rather play here because the league is getting faster and stronger and I’m able to do that. If I went back to play there I would have to adapt again.

'When I first came out I had Diego here also (former Adelaide midfielder) and he was the one you could see straight away he was Brazilian through his touches and his skills. For me it was different.

'The Aussie mentality when I came was more running, chasing things – now you can see a lot more quality about playing football, you can see it Brisbane, Central Coast, even from us. There are good teams here and that’s nice to see, especially for me. I see the A-League building up every year.

'The coaching drills were sometimes hard to understand because of the language, even though I played in America for one season but I didn’t learn much English over there. But in Australia the players and coaches were patient to help and teach me. But when you play football, you just have to follow the others and you’ll be OK.

'What I see now compared to six years ago compared to six years ago, it’s different. The coaches try to bring a lot more quality and style, you can see the improvement. Teams try to play very nice football, good to watch, and when I first came here it weren’t like that.

'Good coaches that have come in – Ange Postecoglou, Aurelio Vidmar was a great coach, Graham Arnold – and have brought some good football to the league and as a player I’m happy to be involved in that.

'It’s important to enjoy the Aussie life; I just threw myself into it. It was easy for me because the Australian way is pretty similar to the Brazilian way – the weather, the people are friendly, like Brazilian people, which is why after two or three weeks here I saw how similar it was and the security and the beautiful things you have here in Australia.

'It wasn’t too hard – my son was born here, and I felt something special to Australia because of that as well. It was so easy to adapt.'

Cedrick Makiadi: Fortuna defended well

SC Freiburg midfielder Cedrick Makiadi believes his side could not have gotten more than a point against Düsseldorf.

He said: 'We played against a side who had not conceded a single goal all season and who are compact, sit deep and keep things tight, waiting for chances on the counter attack. It is tough to break down such a team because you can't just go out there trying to open them up - you have also got to make sure you don't invite them to counter and lose control of the game, because then you lose. You have got to find the right balance. We tried that, but Fortuna defended well. Therefore, we couldn't get more than a point, but that is okay; we can live with it.

'We could have had one or two more points. When I think back to the Leverkusen game (lost 2-0), we gave away the three points too lightly there. We have one win and a draw at home, though, and that is okay. We still have to improve our away form, though.'

Terry quits international duty

Former England captain John Terry on Sunday announced his retirement from international football.

The 31-year-old Chelsea FC captain who won 78 caps will play no further part in England's bid to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The defender said: 'I am today announcing my retirement from international football.

'I would like to thank the England managers who have selected me for my 78 caps. I have had great pleasure in sharing that honour with all the players that I've played with. I would like to thank them, the fans and my family for their support and encouragement during my international career.

'Representing and captaining my country is what I dreamed of as a boy and it has been a truly great honour. I have always given my all and it breaks my heart to make this decision. I want to wish Roy and the team every success for the future.

'I now look forward to playing for Chelsea FC, and challenging for domestic and European honours, and I want to thank the fans and the club for their continued support.'

Del Piero gets No.10 jersey

Alessandro Del Piero received has been handed No.10 jersey by Sydney FC in front of about 2,000 excited fans at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.

The 37-year-old collected the jersey from Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow.

He said: 'I want to say thank you to all of you, my first week here was perfect.

'Very nice people and hopefully we will be able to win the title.'

Italian forward is expected to play his first game for the club in Wednesday's pre-season trial match against Central Coast Mariners at Allianz Stadium, but the game will be closed to fans.

Robben: We are in great shape

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben says his side is in 'great shape' at the moment.

The Dutch was part of the squad that defeated Schalke 2-0 at Schalke - their seventh win in seven games in all competitions.

He said: 'We are just in great shape. Our organisation is spot on and we are creating many changes.

'We are now able to cope better when players aren't available because we have more strength in depth than we had last season. Of course it is nice when this works right from the start of the season. Whether Franck has a small knock, or like I did last week, we are always able to compensate. That is important for everybody to know that even the key players can be replaced. We just have the quality to do that.'

The Dutch wing wizard believes his side is focused on winning the titles.
'Of course the title has been our aim right from the beginning. That is not going to change. Just because we are currently ahead of Dortmund does not mean we will automatically win the league. We have got to fight for every point and not let up. But it is important that we put together a winning streak, as we are doing.

'I had the feeling from the first day of pre-season that we are really hungry. The team wants to prove and achieve something. We have not won a title for two years now and that is not a nice feeling. We want to win titles. If things go as they are at the moment, then you really enjoy yourself out there on the field.'

Phoenix sign Ricardo Clarke

Wellington Phoenix have signed Ricardo Clarke on loan as an injury replacement for injured Dani Sanchez.

Sanchez has been ruled out till late November following an operation on a troublesome knee.

The 19-year-old Panamanian joined the Phoenix on Saturday morning from Panama League side Sporting San Miguelito.

The Phoenix are in Christchurch preparing for their pre-season game against Hyundai A-League newcomers Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert said: 'It depends how much the long journey has taken out of him. If possible I would like to give him a run but we'll wait and see how he is.'

Coach Herbert believes the game against the Wanderers is the 'first real major test' for his side that had toured India and playing local sides in pre-season games.

He said: 'It is a great opportunity to get a benchmark as to where we are at.

'West Sydney have played other A-League teams pre-season. They are new to the competition and will give us a good challenge which is what we need.

'My focus is on what we've been working on for the last few months. We've elected to play a little differently so this will be a test of what we are doing.'

Paul Reid dumps Adelaide for Sydney FC

Sydney FC have completed the signing of former Adelaide player Paul Reid on a one-year contract.

The 33-year-old defensive midfielder, who started his playing career in Wollongong before moving to England, Melbourne and Thailand said he's happy to be back in his hometown.

Reid said: 'It’s definitely going to be a special time, my family are all here and it’ll be great to be playing in front of them.

'When the opportunity arose to come back and trial at Sydney FC it was too good to refuse.

'It’s always hard to come into a new team but it felt really comfortable the first day and they really welcomed me on board. It plays a big part when you go to a new club so I feel at home here and I’m really looking forward to helping the team improve on where Sydney finished last season.'

Sydney FC coach Ian Crook said Reid is 'a very good player'.

Crook said: 'Reidy has been a very good player over a long period of time.

'He gives us some experience and strength in the middle of the park. Defensively he’s strong in the midfield but he is also a winner, a good pro and he will help get us to where we are trying to get.'

UEFA fine Levski Sofia for fans behaviour

Levski Sofia have been fined 30,000 euros by UEFA for racist behaviour by fans during a Europa League second qualifying round game against Sarajevo, the Bulgarian club confirmed on Friday.

Levski Sofia fans brandished a racist banner and insulted the visiting team's players during the July 19 game which Levski won 1-0, before losing the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

The banner also hailed Ratko Mladic, ex-commander of the Bosnian Serb army, and Zeljko Raznatovic, the commander of Serb paramilitary unit 'The Tigers', who participated in wars in Bosnia and Croatia in the 1990s.

Levski Sofia who will mark their 100th anniversary next year have advised their fans to behave to avoid further sanctions in future.

'Fans should realise that the club is responsible for all of their extreme or irrational actions.'
