Scolari: We have an obligation to win the World Cup

Brazil new coach Luiz Felipe Scolari says his side 'have an obligation' to win the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ on home soil.

Scolari guided Brazil to the 2002 FIFA World Cup triumph.

He said: 'We have an obligation to win, we are playing at home. Don't you think our players are aware of the importance of winning the trophy on home soil?

'We are not favourites right now but we intend to turn ourselves into favourites during the tournament.

The objective is clear - to win the World Cup in 2014. I don't feel under pressure. The players are the ones with pressure on them.'

Benitez: No space for Lukaku

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez has ruled out the return of Romelu Lukaku from West Brom to the Stamford Bridge squad in January.

The manager is also keeping his fingers cross on players that will be signed in the January transfer window.

Benitez said: 'The board asked my opinion about future signings but it is too soon for me. I am pleased they are asking me but I want to see the team for a couple more games and more training sessions and then I will have a better idea.

'We know that Lukaku is doing well but it may be good for his development for the future for him to stay there. Maybe again I will have an opinion in a couple of games.'

Terry and Lampard can be helpful

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez believes captain John Terry, Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge need more time to be fit.

He said: 'Lampard was doing part of the training session, the warm-up and nothing else, and Terry and Sturridge are working hard with physios but they need some more time.

'I was talking to Terry about how he feels and he is fine. He wants to push and be with the players on the pitch but it is too early. It is a knee problem and we have to wait to see the reaction when turns. He needs two or three training sessions with the team and then we will see.

'Players with this character and leadership can be helpful when things are wrong, they will be important for us; as well as for what they can give us on the pitch, for what they can give to the team as a group.'

Redknapp: I will back Jordan for Scotland job

QPR manager Harry Redknapp says he will support his assistant Joe Jordan for Scotland managerial job.

Jordan has been tip to take over from Craig Levein who was sacked by the Scottish Football Association earlier this month.

'I think Joe was probably interested. They haven't done anything yet. If they came calling it would be up to Joe, it's his life. If he said to me he wanted to manage Scotland I'm not going to argue with him, that's for sure. Joe's a good man, a top man. I'm pleased to have him and Kevin here. Kevin and Joe are all sorted.'

AVB tells Modric: Leave Bale alone

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has told Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric not to lure Garteh Bale.

The former Spurs midfielder Luka Modric has suggested winger Gareth Bale should join him at Real Madrid.

AVB said: 'It is extremely difficult if not impossible. Modric is aware of Gareth's performances because of his love for Tottenham and the fact that he is very connected with him and this whole club.

'The club has to protect our assets regarding our objectives. We have to qualify for the Champions League as Luka says and for that to happen we need the players that can make a difference. In the end we are not looking to sell. Modric now needs to worry about getting into the quarter finals of the Champions League and Atletico Madrid this weekend. He should focus more on his club.'

Guus Hiddink set to quit

Former Netherlands manager Guus Hiddink says he will retire from football management at the end of this season.

The 66-year-old who is presently managing Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkalahas had a glorious time with PSV Eindhoven winning the 1988 European Cup final.

The Dutchman has guided Anzhi into the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League while they are also on course to qualify for the UEFA Champions League via the Russian Premier League.

Hiddink said: 'I'm basically going to stop at the end of the season. At 66 years old I think I've nearly had enough. I don't know what I'll do. Maybe I'll be an advisor or supervisor to young players or coaches. I want to teach people how to handle certain issues in football or how they can plot their career path. That sounds interesting. I will not disappear into a black hole.

'I get up every day with so much energy, but you have to be careful not to get into a routine. You have to be careful that people will think, 'here he is again'. So Anzhi is basically the last team which I will coach.'

The Dutchman shot to prominence by winning three Eredivisie titles, three Dutch Cups and the European Cup in his first stint as PSV coach between 1987 and 1990, before returning to the club in 2002 to win three further league titles.

He also managed Fenerbahce, Valencia, Real Madrid, Real Betis and Chelsea in a varied career, while also guiding the Dutch national team to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup™ in 1998.

Hiddink also led Korea Republic to fourth place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup before further successful stints in international football with Australia and Russia.

Galliani: I suffered a lot over Ibra

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani says his team suffered after the sale of Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

He said: 'I suffered a lot over Ibra. He’s a player full of courage and strength. He was a great luxury that we had to give up, but I feel consoled when I think that if Ibra had stayed then El Shaarawy perhaps wouldn’t be doing what he’s done so far this year. There’s no way to prove it, but it’s how I feel.'

Benitez: I have been working with Torres

Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez says he is working on his striker Fernando Torres.

The former Liverpool boss has outlined two areas where he is working on the Spaniard.

Benitez said: 'I can guarantee that I have been talking with 15 players for five minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour; it depends on each player.

'Just talking about little things; what in the player's opinion was wrong, what is right. I have been working with Torres, and with the others.

'We have to improve some players physically and they will maybe come back to the strength that they had. Torres had very real pace and it is not because he is getting old, or injuries - he has to train in a way that will maybe suit him and we will have find this way. There is some work in the gym, on his strength that maybe he needs to do again.

'On Tuesday we were working with Torres and with Oscar and we are trying to find this understanding. But it will take some time. We were also working on some little movements for David Luiz, for Ashley Cole, for Eden Hazard and others - we are trying to improve each player a little bit but then we have to put them together.

'We can talk about the striker but we have to create more chances. If we create more chances and afterwards he is not scoring, I will analyse why. Then we will continue.'

Allegri: We are laying groundwork

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri believes his side can make the top three spot this season.

Milan will face Chievo at the San Siro on Saturday.

The coach, 45, said: 'This year we're having and we'll have some difficulties but the club is laying the groundwork so that in future, starting from next season, we can compete for the top three in Italy.

'Chievo played superbly against Napoli. They're full of running and they give very little away. They're an aggressive outfit and dangerous on the counter.'

Di Matteo: I will never restrict Luiz qualities

Roberto Di Matteo has risen to the defence of Brazilian defender David Luiz.

The 25-year-old central defender was widely described as at fault for Manchester United's second goal in the midweek cup game.

The Blues manager said: 'You need to see both sides because on one hand you a have a fantastic player who can decide games for you and on the other you need to take into account that everybody can make mistakes.

'We want our defenders to play, to be involved when we are attacking. I know more focus is put on the mistakes but David Luiz scored a fantastic free-kick against Nordsjaelland and other important goals for us.

'You need to be able to take the best out of the players and I will never restrict his qualities and he is a fantastic player for us. Certainly we are working on the fact that in certain moments it is better to play it simple, but he is a player with great qualities and he has decided many games for us as well.'

Wenger: Van Persie is absolutely exceptional

Arsène Wenger believes his defenders must watch over former captain Robin van Persie when Gunners clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Arsenal manager said: 'Van Persie has a great quality in the fraction of a second that he understands where to go.

'And you can talk and talk and talk but defenders have to read that at the same time. His speed of analysing those little pockets around the box is absolutely exceptional.

'They [my defenders] know him as well because they have played against him in training. In the game it's a question of timing, how quickly will they read it as well as he reads it?'

Bulgarian Football Union suspend referee Ristoskov

Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) has suspended controversial referee Hristo Ristoskov from officiating matches after 'committing many mistakes' during CSKA Sofia's 2-1 Buglarian Cup victory at Ludogorets on Wednesday, an official of BFU disclosed.

BFU refereeing commission chief Nikola Dzhuganski told local media: 'He'll be suspended and you'll not see him officiating a game for a long time. He committed many mistakes.

CSKA said Hristoskov failed to award two penalties and committed a number of other errors during the Cup match in Razgrad.

The 31-times Bulgarian champions protested against 'the extremely biased refereeing' and told the BFU not to appoint Ristoskov for any of their games henceforth.

CSKA captain Ivan Bandalovski said: 'I've never seen such a refereeing, it's not normal. My desire to play football disappears after matches like this.

'You must be blind or crazy to not see what's going on.'

Former UEFA referee Ristoskov, 41, was beaten up by three masked men outside his home a couple of weeks after officiating the 'eternal derby' between Levski Sofia and CSKA in 2006.

In 2008, he was banned by the BFU for committing errors in a domestic game and went to Austria to officiate in the lower divisions.

Last year, Ristoskov said he was offered $100,000 to help fix a UEFA Cup game between Azerbaijan's Neftchi Baku and Austria's SV Ried in 2007. He said he rejected the offer immediately.

Ferguson defends referee Clattenburg on racial abuse

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says referee Mark Clattenburg could have used 'inappropriate language' on Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi and Juan Mata.

The central referee was accused of insulting the Blues duo in highly tension game. Manchester United won the game 3-2 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The United manager told BBC: 'I don't believe Mark Clattenburg would make any comments like that, I refuse to believe it.

'I think it's unthinkable in the modern climate, I just don't believe it simple as that. There's no way a referee would stoop to that I'm convinced about that and if we see the game today as it was 25 years ago it's completely changed.'

Heskey: Put a stop to racism

Newcastle Jets striker Emile Heskey has implored football authorities to do more to combat racism.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker told BBC World Service: 'It can't just keep happening, at some stage you've got to try and put some force on federations to try and stamp it out because if you keep fining people what does it really matter - maybe dock 10 points and they would make some action.'

Cahill: We showed character against Man United

Gary Cahill believes that Chelsea 'showed character ' against Manchester United in Wednesday night's Capital One Cup 5-4 victory.

The central defender said: 'It was a massive moment us, and Eden put it away nicely.

'We had a lot of chances and we could have put the game to bed a lot earlier than we did, but thankfully we managed to get a good battling result.

'It is not ideal for defenders, letting goals in and there were a couple of mistakes, but that is how football is and we showed great character to come back from that.

'We showed character to come back [from two goals down] in Sunday's game as well, and thankfully we were on the right end of the result this time.

'We have been more free-flowing this season, creating lots of chances up front, and maybe at times it does leave you more open at the back..but it is entertaining to watch and the most important thing is we are creating chances and scoring goals nearly every game.

'Defensively this season we have been strong most games, and we need to get back to that, but in these crazy cup games you just need to get them won.'

Man. City after Hideki Ishige

Manchester City is set to sign Shimizu S-Pulse midfielder Hideki Ishige.

Shimizu team manager Afshin Ghotbi confirms the interest of the Premiership champions in the 18-year-old wonderkid.

He told Japan's Kyodo News: 'If you want to build top-class players, you have to give them various experiences and opportunities to see first-hand what the world level is about.

'And what better experience for Ishige than to train with the first team of Manchester City, the champions of England, and have (manager Roberto) Mancini see him first hand and train with some of the top players in the world.

'There is interest in him, not just Man City but many clubs in Europe and he deserves it. He's a real fantastic talent.

'As far as I'm concerned, he's not for sale and we want him to be a part of S-Pulse for the next few years to come. There has been no offer, (City) just want to see him and we are doing the same with other players with other clubs.

'The greatest asset of Japan is its youths. I'm very, very positive about the youth players in Japan and their qualities. Ishige is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.'

Wenger: Show respect to Van Persie

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has appealled to fans to 'show respect' to his former captain Robin van Persie when he plays against his old club for the first time on Saturday.

The striker spent eight years with the Gunners before moving to Manchester United in the close season for a reported 24 million pound ($38.74 million) transfer fee.

Wenger said: 'I don't know (what reception he'll get but) I hope it is a respectful one because he has played for us for eight years, he has done very well for us. You want him to be respected.

'We campaign against discrimination, it was still the case last week so why should it not be the case this week?'

Wenger wants Walcott contract resolved by Christmas

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Theo Walcott will pen a new contract by Christmas.

Contract talks between the forward and club have stalled with the Gunners not ready to accept Walcott's wage expectations, while his demand to play as striker is also a sticking point.

The forward will be out of contract at the end of the season and Wenger said in his press conference on Thursday that Walcott's future was now a matter of 'urgency'.

Wenger said: 'I want it resolved by Christmas. His right position is through the middle in the future.'

The 23-year-old scored a hat-trick in Gunners 7-5 Capital One Cup win over Reading.

He said: 'Theo was superb last night. I always said that he will be a striker, so we are on the same wavelength there.

'First of all he is a good finisher now. Secondly, he knows where to be in the box on the rebound.

'That's a quality of a striker you can't give, you feel it or you don't.

'He has the qualities to play as a striker and I hope he will be a striker at Arsenal. I always said I want to keep him.

'During the contract talks you have to give him credit for the way he's committed to the team and the way he behaves.'

RDM: Promote exciting football, not the other stuff

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo believes his side played an 'exciting game of football' in th Capital One Cup against Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

'I am very pleased with the players tonight, who performed on the big stage and will play a big part in our season.

'I think we showed on Sunday already that we have big characters in the dressing room and we had to show it again tonight. We showed big, big heart and passion and pride and didn't want to lose this game. It was a very exciting game of football to watch, a typical cup game, quite open at times and a lot of mistakes from both teams, because there were a lot of young players involved in this game.

'Over the last two days we have seen some exciting thrilling football games typical of cup competition and a lot of future stars in these games. That's what we should promote, and not the other stuff.

'We will have to assess the team over the next few days. Playing extra-time has taken more out of us than we would have liked but on the other hand spirit is sky high and when the mood is positive you feel the fatigue a little bit less.

'We had a few suspensions tonight so people will be back for Saturday and we will see which players are freshest and most energised for Saturday.'

Giggs: Chelsea had the most experienced players

Ryan Giggs says Manchester United's Capital One Cup defeat at Stamford on Wednesday night was 'tough to take'.
Chelsea defeated United 5-4 in a highly dramatic game.

The veteran who has played 917 matches for the Reds was full of regret at the end of the game.

Giggs said: 'It's tough to take. When you score four goals away from home more often than not you win the game, but it just seems to be one of those weeks in the Cup.

'We had the game in the bag with seconds to go. We had the ball deep in their half, lost it and they went up the other end and got the penalty. When it goes to extra-time it's anyone's game.

'I'm proud of the young players who played though - there were some great performances. They will have learnt a lot and you learn more from losing as well. You try and take the positives from a game like that but there are a lot of disappointed lads in there and rightly so because they put in good performances. But they'll learn from it and the experience they'll gain from this is more than they could ever get from a Reserve game.

'Out of the two sides they probably had the most experienced players with a lot of quality to come off the bench. They had to stick all their big guns on in the end to make an impact which they did.

'As I said though I'm proud of the young players - they never stopped battling. We're just disappointed to put on a good performance, score four goals and come away with nothing.

'You've got to be prepared for anything and fight right to the end. Unfortunately it wasn't to be for us. We put so much effort in but we go home disappointed and feel completely different to Sunday (after the league victory over Chelsea).

'But we'll take the loss and look forward to the rest of the season because there are plenty of positives to take going forward.'
