Pato set to join Corinthians

Corinthians have made an offer of 15 million for AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato.

According to ANSA, the world champions are keen on having the Brazilian striker in their fold.

AC Milan chief executive Galliani judged the meeting with the directors of the club from Sao Paulo to be 'very positive'. And it seems that the player has also closely followed the affair from the start. This is why it’s legitimate to believe that only the signatures are missing – those should arrive on 1 January.

Montolivo: We are underdogs but can beat Barcelona

Riccardo Montolivo believes AC Milan can pip Spain giants FC Barcelona in UEFA Champions League round of 16 to get through to the quarter-finals.

The midfielder said: 'Barcelona are as good a club side as Spain are a good national side – plus, they have Messi!

'On paper, we start as underdogs. But, that'll be extra motivation for us: we have to go into the game believing we can qualify. But we need to develop as a side and become more of a team.'

Forest sack Sean O'Driscoll

Nottingham Forest have fired manager Sean O'Driscoll just hours after the club's 4-2 win against Leeds United.

The sack of O'Driscoll was announced by club co-owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi via his Twitter account.

Forest are eighth in the Championship table, a point outside the play-off places.

Al-Hasawi said: 'And with the January transfer window approaching, we feel it’s the right time to make a change.

'We are looking to bring in an ambitious manager with Premier League experience.'

O'Driscoll joined Forest five months ago.

Co-owner Abduklaziz Al-Hasawi added: 'The timing of our decision may look a little odd after the win over Leeds but sometimes you need to make changes with the long term future in mind.

'Sometimes those changes need to be made from a position of strength rather than weakness and that is what we are trying to do.'

The club have employed and sacked three managers within the last 18 months.

After the sack of Billy Davies in June 2011, Steve McClaren, Steve Cotterill and O'Driscoll have all been fired.

After the win against Leeds, O'Driscoll said: 'I think we need consistency, sometimes we have consistent results from inconsistent performances and then we have inconsistent results from consistent performances.'

Friedel signs new Tottenham contract

Brad Freidel has extended his contract with Tottenham Hotspur until 2014.

The 41 year old American goalkeeper is the oldest player in the Premier League and he is also the only man in the history of the division to start 300 consecutive matches.

He started the season as the first-choice goalkeeper at White Hart Lane but has since lost his place in the side to close-season signing Hugo Lloris, the France international.

Friedel, who has 82 international caps for the United States, has been playing in England since 1997, when he joined Liverpool. He failed to make a name for himself at Anfield and joined Blackburn Rovers three years later, going on to make 300 appearances for the Ewood Park club.

The veteran American goalkeeper joined Aston Villa in a £2.5m deal in 2008 and he spent three years there before joining Tottenham in 2011.

Enrico Preziosi : Borrielo is not leaving

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi says striker Marco Borriello is not leaving his side.

Preziosi on Sky Sport Italia said: 'Marco Borriello stays here. That is as long as he doesn't put in a transfer request himself.'

The president revealed that he met Inter board but they did not talk about Borrielo.

'I have received no enquiries about the player. There is no Boriello 'situation'.

'It would be crazy to let him go. We need two defenders, for example we are interested in Manfredini, but we might also see a midfielder coming in.'

Milito: Inter will win more trophies

Diego Milito believes Inter Milan are in good position to win the Scudetto.

The Argentine striker told Sky Sport Italia: 'Everything, so far, swings in our favour. We are a 'new' team but we are improving all the time and are exceeding our expectations. Juve, of course, are doing really well... But we hope to add some trophies to our collection in 2013.'

The former Genoa player added: 'I'm happy here at Inter. I feel important here. In the future I'd like to return to Argentina but now I'm enjoying my time here.'

Agnelli: We have the best attack and defence

Juventus president Agnelli has play down his interest in Didier Drogba.

Agnelli said: 'I prefer to focus on the players we have. Juve have the best attack and the best defence. We also have a staff that know when to make the most of opportunities, they don’t let them slip away.

'In January the prices are inflated for players who we don’t necessarily need. You make important signings in the summer. We’ll see whether we want to make any moves.'

Nuremberg appoint Wiesinger and Reutershahn

Michael Wiesinger and Armin Reutershahn have been appointed as joint coaches of struggling Nuremberg on Monday following Dieter Hecking's decision to take over at Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg at the weekend.

Wiesinger, 39, who has recently been working with the club's youth academy, and Reutershahn, 52, an assistant under Hecking, will take charge for the second half of the season.

Nuremberg are fifth from bottom in the table.

Nuremberg said Wiesinger, who played 186 league games for the club between 1993-99, would have the final say on team matters.

Sporting director Martin Bader told Nuremberg said: 'Michael Wiesinger and Armin Reutershahn we have two coaches from our own ranks that enjoy a great amount of trust and acceptance.

'Michael has achieved great things with the youth setup and should bring a fresh impetus with him.'

Wiesinger in his response said: 'Nuremberg is my club. I was a player here and have put my heart and passion into my work here over the past year and a half.

'To get the chance to take on this challenge is very special for me.'

Martinez: Williams is not a nasty footballer

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has risen to the defence of his defender Ashley Williams following the criticism that trailed his action in the game against Manchester United.

William fired a shot at Robin van Persie at close range while the United forward was lying on the ground following a foul at the Liberty Stadium.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said Van Persie was 'lucky to be alive' after the incident in the 74th minute of the 1-1 draw.

Martinez said: 'I signed Ashley Williams for Swansea and I know his character inside out. I can guarantee you without even looking at the incident that he is not a nasty footballer.

'He is a winner and fully committed, a leader and a captain, and I don't for one second doubt that he did not do that on purpose.

'You see the incident and it is a very, very dangerous situation. If you see one of your players with a bang on the back of the head it is really dangerous and it can have bad consequences. You can understand that.

'It is an action of the game. He can show frustration - it is an emotional game and it is very unfortunate that it hits Van Persie in a part of the body where he could have been hurt heavily, and you don't want to see that.

'But from my point of view, I know Ashley Williams really well - when you sign a player you find out about a player and I can guarantee you he is not the type of footballer who would do that on purpose.'

Huntelaar signs new deal with Schalke

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has signed a new two years deal that will keep him at Schalke until 2015.

The Dutch striker said: 'I've thought about this decision long and hard and I'm very grateful that the club officials allowed me the time to do so. But now I've made the choice I'm most comfortable with.

'I've always felt at home at Schalke, with the club and the fans, and I want to send out a positive signal now because I believe in our team and I believe we can still achieve a great deal in the second half of the Bundesliga season.

'And we aren't without a chance against Galatasaray in the last 16 of the Champions League, of course.'

Huntelaar, who joined Schalke from AC Milan in August 2010, was the Bundesliga top scorer with 29 goals last season and has scored 11 times in all competitions so far this term.

He also broke Hermann Eppenhoff's club record, set in 1941, for the most goals in a season with 48 in all competitions in the last campaign.

QPR fine Jose Bosingwa £100,000

QPR have fined defender Jose Bosingwa £100,000 for refusing to sit on the substitutes bench during the game against Fulham.

According to Press Association Sport, QPR manager Harry Redknapp imposed the maximum punishment possible on Bosingwa after taking exception to the full-back's attitude to being dropped for last Saturday's 2-1 win over Fulham.

Bosingwa, who joined Rangers from Chelsea this summer on a contract reportedly worth £50,000 a week, was said to have stormed out of Loftus Road after learning of his exclusion.

The 30-year-old Portuguese has also been left out of the squad for Saturday's game at Newcastle.

Fico: Balotelli is irresponsible

Manchester City Mario Balotelli's girlfriend Raffaella Fico says the Italian is 'irresponsible'.

Fico who gave birth to Pia reveals that the baby belongs to the striker.

In an exclusive interview with Italian magazine Chi, Fico said: 'As far as I’m cornered, Mario is irresponsible. After a while, he just showed a complete lack of interest in me and in our daughter. We were supposed to be getting married. That was our plan, our dream. But suddenly it’s all fallen apart, and I don’t know why.

'He called me hours after the birth on the day Pia was born. 'You've given birth? Ah. OK. I'm not bothered.

'(He) doesn't even show the slightest bit of interest in what his daughter looks like, even if he doesn’t ask me to take a DNA test, I’ll have one anyway. I’ll make the results public and I’ll prove to the entire world that Pia is Mario Balotelli’s daughter.

'I’ve not had any financial help from Mr Balotelli. He’s worth more than the Mona Lisa, but he hasn’t so much as taken out a single cent for his daughter. I’ve never received so much as a phone call from him, not even to ask if we need anything. I can make do without him and his money!

'The door will always be open for him to see his daughter. But the door to my heart is firmly shut. For ever!'

Peter Ndlovu battling for life after car crash

Former Coventry City striker Peter Ndlovu is battling for his life after being involved in a fatal car crash that resulted in the death of his brother and another passenger.

The accident happened in his native country Zimbabwe on their way back from a friendly game between Highlanders Legends and a local team in the holiday resort of Victoria Falls.

Peter's brother Adam was believed to have been driving when a tyre burst, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash into several trees before rolling.
Adam, 42, lost his life and a female passenger who has not been identified yet.

Nhlanhla Dube, a spokesman for the Movement for Democratic Change and believed to be one of Adam’s close friends said: 'My first phone call today delivered shattering news, horrible, horrible news that my friend and member of the big Highlanders family Adam Ndlovu is no more and that his younger brother Peter is in critical state.'

Peter Ndlovu, 39, is Zimbabwe's all-time leading goalscorer after netting 38 goals in 100 appearances.

He made his name in England with Coventry between 1991-1997 when the Midlands club were mainstays in the top flight.

He also played for Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United before moving back to Africa in 2004 with South African club Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mario Balotelli has taken Manchester City to a tribunal to contest a two-week fine of £340,000 imposed on him.

Manchester City punished the striker for breaches of club discipline which included an incident last month when he was seen out partying less than 12 hours before the game against Tottenham.

The Italian striker is unhappy with the fine and will attend an independent two-man hearing in London on Wednesday to contest it.

If he loses, Balotelli will likely have to pay tens of thousands in costs in addition to his fine.

City manager Roberto Mancini says he is unhappy with the attitude of the striker.

Mancini told BBC: 'He needs to work and if he deserves to play because he worked well then he will do, but if not he will be in the stands or on the bench like all of the other players.

'He needs to train and when he starts to play like his quality he will play again. We won the championship last year because all four of the strikers were scoring goals and we want that again.

'When you have a player with the quality that Mario has, you can't understand that (he) continues to throw (it) out of the window.'

Trapattoni: Drogba is perfect for Juventus

Giovanni Trapattoni believes former Chelsea hitman Didier Drogba will be a perfect fit for Juventus.

The Republic of Ireland coach said: 'Drogba is the right man for the job. He’d be perfect as he’d even be able to play in the Champions League. He has class, experience and alongside Vucinic would form a formidable strike partnership. Giovinco would have to drop to the bench a lot more, but this Juve will need everyone to be playing their part come spring, when they’ll be fighting for the scudetto and the Champions League. And their good enough to mount a challenge in both competitions.'

The Santiago Bernabéu today celebrates 65 years as the home of Real Madrid. Inaugurated on 14 December, 1947 when Madrid played Os Belenenses.

The Whites defeated the Portuguese team Os Belenenses 3-1. Barinaga scored the first goal scorer at the ground, while a double from Chus Alonso also contributed to the final victory.

From its earliest days, the Madrid ground has been a world-class venue in the world of football and source of pride for all those who support Real. In 1955, it was the name of the stadium was changed memory of Santiago Bernabéu.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez says the club has the plan of making the stadium the best in the world.

'We’re going to completely envelop our stadium in a skin, which will be a first in world architectural design. The Bernabéu will thus become a unique stadium, indisputably the best in the world.'

Cahill: I joined Chelsea for silverware

Gary Cahill says he joined Chelsea 'to win trophies'.

The former Bolton central defender has already made significant impact in Chelsea colour.

Cahill said: 'When I came to Chelsea I came to win trophies and this is a big opportunity to do that.

'It is one that doesn't come around very often and we have travelled all this way and we want to go as far as we can. Since we have been over here we have realised how big it is and we have some Brazilians in our squad and it is huge for them. It has sunk in now and this is why you sign for a big club.'

Benitez: I intend to win World Club Cup

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez says he has 'a lot of information' on Monterrey.

The Blues will face Victor Vucetich's side in a semi-final game at the Yokohoma International Stadium on Thursday.

Benitez said: 'We know the team, we have staff collecting videos and watching them, I've watched them as well so we have a lot of information.

'They're a good team who can play the passing game and move the ball easily, but at the same time they can play more direct.

'It will be an interesting test for us, we need to manage the tempo of the game and see if they can match us physically. They can change tactics as well during the game, change shape and play different formations, so the coach is doing a good job.

'We have some talented players in the middle, we try and balance the team and put some creativity in there but at the same time we need to defend.

'My experience of this competition is to see how the players are the day before the game in training. After this, you must consider that some players will be fresher than others. After watching Monterrey and analysing my players we will decide.

'I intend to win, so I will try to use the best team possible to win the first game,' he explained. 'After that we will think about the next game. My experience is that you can't leave things for the final because you must win the semi-final.

'The main thing is to play a good game with high tempo, good passing and creating chances.'

Conte: We must do well in Italy if..

Antonio Conte believes his side must do well in Italy if they want to 'make progress in Europe'.

The manager who just returned from suspension said: 'In order to make progress in Europe we have to show our worth in Italy. It would be great to win another title.

'Playing in the Champions League is crucial if we want to start spending 40-45 million, which we haven't got today. Anyone can win once, but winning the title for two seasons on the trot is by no means easy.

'We have opened up a useful gap over Inter, but it'll vanish if we can't keep on winning. This season we have put the past behind us; we know where we stand. Last season we started off as a bit of an unknown quantity even though we had already raised a few eyebrows by this time last year. It will be difficult to follow.

'We are at the top of the table and deservedly so because we have worked hard to get there. Let's not just pass it off as run of the mill, because it isn't.'

Mancini: Balotelli is not for sale

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says Mario Balotelli is 'not for sale' despite his criticism of the player after Sunday's Manchester derby.

Mancini chose Balotelli ahead of Carlos Tevez in the Manchester derby that ended 3-2 in favour of Manchester United.

Mancini told La Gazzetta dello Sport: 'Balotelli has enormous quality, he is not for sale. He is a player of 22 years old who has the quality to change a game at any time. I hope this moment will come soon.'

Cech: We will do our best to win

Petr Cech says Chelsea will do their best to win the World Club Cup.

Chelsea who have been seeded to play in the semi-finals face Mexican side Monterrey on Thursday.

Monterrey defeated Ulsan Hyundai 3-1 in Sunday's quarter-final.

The goalkeeper said: 'We have to take it step by step. Monterrey have a slight advantage as they have been here and are acclimatised, they had a very good game yesterday, and will now face us on Thursday.

'We need to get as fit as possible as fast as possible, acclimatise and get used to the change in hours. I hope it's going to work and we are looking forward to the game.

'We were already seeded to play in the semi-finals, ourselves and Corinthians are seen as the favourites, but we can live with that fact, I have no problem with it. We've come to do our best and win the competition, we can assume the position as favourites and we will try to do our best on the pitch.'

Moratti: We were the better team

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has hailed his side after their 2-1 win over Napoli on Sunday.

He said: 'Last night I heard that Inter won because of their quality football and I read the same this morning in the papers. I think you lot need to agree on something but I think we were the better team.

'I've never really been that fussed about possession stats, because I come from the old tradition of Inter under Herrera, when we had very little of the ball and yet always won. So I'm not overly concerned by possession although there are certain games in which you need to keep the ball to prevent your opponents from getting on top.'

Milan set to sign a replacement for De Jong

AC Milan are set to sign a replacement for injured midfielder Nigel De Jong in the January transfer window.

The Dutch midfielder snapped his achilles tendon in his side's 4-2 victory at Torino on Sunday and could miss the rest of the season.

Milan president Silvio Berlusconi said: 'We’re disappointed, it is a real shame for De Jong.

'We’re evaluating the opportunity of going back on to the market if that is what is necessary.'

Mueller: Messi is an incredible player

Gerd Mueller has praised Barcelona forward Lionel Messi after he sets a new goals record in a calendar year.

Mueller scored 85 goals for Bayern Munich and West Germany in 1972 and the record stood for 40 years until Sunday night when Messi netted his 85th and 86th goals of an incredible 2012 in Barca's 2-1 win at Real Betis.

Mueller paid tributes to the Argentine on Sport1.de: 'My record stood for 40 years - 85 goals in 60 games - and now the best player in the world has broken it, and I'm delighted for him. He is an incredible player, gigantic.

'He's such a nice and modest professional and I hope he gets one or two more goals in 2012 and that he can then hold onto the record for the next 40 years. He's fantastic. He only has one defect and that is that he doesn't play for Bayern Munich!'

De Jong to undergo achilles operation

The club said the achilles operation will be performed by Professor Orava at his Turku clinic.

David Beckham had his operation performed by the professor as did Giuseppe Pancaro.

The FA: We will identify those responsible

The FA is set to investigate the incident in which an object was thrown from the crowd at Rio Ferdinand following Manchester United's third goal against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The FA say it will liaise with Greater Manchester Police and await the reports of both our crowd control advisor who was present at the game and the match referee.

An FA spokesperson said: 'It is disappointing that after a great game and advert for the Premier League that we are discussing this issue.

'We will work with the clubs and authorities to identify those responsible and support the strongest sanctions available, including life bans.

'We condemn any such acts and it is simply unacceptable that any player is exposed to injury in this way. To witness Rio Ferdinand leaving the field with a cut above his eye to receive treatment is appalling.

'Football in this country has made great progress over recent decades. However, we must maintain the safety and security inside of our stadia and to do this we need to isolate and identify any individuals guilty of offences with strong penalties to act as a deterrent to others.'

Messi sets new goals record

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has broken world record for goals scored in a calendar year at Betis on Sunday evening.

The Argentine scored a brace at the Benito Villamarín. The goals took his total in 2012 to 86 goals, beating the all-time record in a calendar year set by Gerd Müller (1972).

- In the league, Messi has scored 56 goals in 34 games, while Müller got 42 in 34 games.

- in Europe, Messi got 13 in 11 matches, while Müller got 10 in 4 matches.

- In the cup, Messi got 3 goals in 7 matches and Müller got 7 out of 6.

- September was Messi’s most productive month (13), while March (13) was the most prolific period for the former Bayern striker.

- Messi has scored 86 goals in 66 matches for Barça and Argentina. The German got 85 in 60.

- 76 of Messi’s goals were scored with his left foot, 7 with the right and 3 with his head.

- 74 were scored from inside the box (14 were penalties) and 12 outside (7 from free kicks).

- Malaga and Bayer Leverkusen (6) are the teams Messi has got the most goals against so far in 2012.

- Iniesta (9), Cesc (6) and Alexis (6) supplied him with the most assists.

- His 23 goals in 15 games are his best ever start to a Liga campaign, and equal the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo (2011/12).

- He has scored twice in his last five Liga appearances.

- On Sunday, Messi scored his first league goals at the Benito Villamarín, although he did score there once before in the cup in 2010/11.

- He had three shots on target, and two of those went in (the other struck both the goalkeeper and the post).

- He also completed 44 passes out of 54 attempts.

Ferdinand hurt by thrown object

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand has sustained a head wound after he was hit by an object in the game against Manchester City.

Ferdinand sustained the injury while celebrating Robin van Persie's winning goal in the game.

The visitors beat Manchester City 3-2 in the game at the Etihad Stadium.

Greater Manchester Police said no arrests had been made in relation to the case.

While trying to recover from the injury, a City fan ran on to the field towards Ferdinard, but was stopped by City goalkeeper Joe Hart before he could reach the defender.

The man was then taken away by police officers.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said it was 'unfortunate' that the object had been thrown.

He said: 'That shouldn't happen. The same thing happened at Chelsea, which was masked by all the other things. We could have done without that.

'We can do without that, after a great game between two sides.'
