Clattenburg in trouble for racial abuse

Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has been accused of racially abusing two Chelsea players on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

FA chiefs have began an investigation into allegations that Clattenburg insulted Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel and called Juan Mata a 'Spanish t**t' after Chelsea slumped to a 3-2 home defeat in the hands of Manchester United.

Society of Black Lawyers have written to cops demanding a full inquiry into the incident, but Clattenburg, 37, has maintained his innocence.

In a letter to the Metropolitan Police, the man behind the mooted black players’ breakaway union, Peter Herbert, wrote: 'Our information is that racist remarks were directed at John Obi Mikel and at Juan Mata. If so, that is wholly unacceptable in any circumstances.

'It is appropriate that the Metropolitan Police Service see if a racially-aggravated offence has occurred.'

Last night, police said they had received the letter but it was not certain an investigation would follow.

Referee Clattenburg who sent off Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic and striker Fernando Torres, was yesterday preparing a vigorous denial of the accusations.

Clattenburg carrer, which saw him officiate in August’s Olympic final, may end abruptly if found guilty.

A source said: 'Mark has explained his version of events to his fellow professionals in the game. He is confident he will be cleared.'

Clattenburg, who wrote of an 'extraordinary incident' in his match report, has the full support of his union Prospect.

But he will not officiate any game this weekend following discussions between the FA and the Professional Game Match Officials, which represents Premier League referees.

The PGMO insisted the focus of any game should be on the players — not the officials.

It said: 'The intense level of scrutiny would detract from the match and be unfair to the clubs and supporters.'

Teammates of John Mikel Obi and Juan Mata are reported to be willing to make statements to the FA on the issue.

Carrick: It was a big result

Manchester United Michael Carrick believes his side deserves the maximum points in their Sunday's clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder said: 'It's a huge three points. Not winning here for a long time against our biggest rivals, we wanted to put that right and we wanted to win for that.

'Plus the fact that if we had lost today we would've been well adrift. I know there's a long way to go, but it wouldn't have been a good position for us to be in. So for those two reasons it was a big result.

'Over the last three or four years we've had some really great performances here and not come away with what we deserved, so today it was sweet to get the three points.

'We've really played some great stuff and the performances have been spot on, so to come away with no wins has been disappointing and we felt the next win was close. We have had some decisions not go our way and it's been tough for us here, but maybe that turned around for us today. We'll take what we get!

'Especially against your rivals – the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, Arsenal next week – it's important you take points off them.'

PAOK appeal rejected

The UEFA Appeals Body has rejected PAOK FC's appeal against the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body's decisions following the incidents in the game against SK Rapid Wien in Salonika.

PAOK have been ordered to play their next three UEFA competition home games behind closed doors, i.e. with no spectators present. The club have also been fined €150,000.

In addition, the Greek club will be excluded from the next competition for which they qualify in the next five years, with this ban being suspended for a probationary period of three years.

PAOK were charged with the improper conduct of supporters – crowd disturbances, pitch invasion, setting off and throwing of missiles and fireworks – and insufficient organisation. They won at home 2-1 but lost the second leg 3-0 and were eliminated from the competition.

Chelsea complain to PGMO over Clattenburg

Chelsea FC have presented an official complaint to the Premier League following Sunday’s controversial home defeat by United, in which Fernando Torres was sent off and Javier Hernandez scored an offside winner.

A club spokesman confirmed: 'We have lodged a complaint to the Premier League match delegate regarding inappropriate language used by the referee towards two of our players in two separate incidents in today’s game.'

It is understood that midfielder John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata chased the FIFA-accredited referee after the final whistle to challenge him.

Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo mentioned the allegations to Clattenburg when they were brought to his attention by the players after the match.

The confrontation came after referee Clattenburg, who refereed the Olympic final at Wembley, had sent off Chelsea Branislav Ivanovic and striker Fernando Torres.

Last night the Professional Games Match Officials board issued a statement on referee Mark Clattenburg’s behalf.

It said: 'PGMO is aware of the allegations and they are being treated with the utmost seriousness.

'Mark will cooperate fully and welcomes the opportunity for the facts to be established. No further comment will be made until this matter has been properly investigated.'

Di Matteo: It's a shame

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo says referee Mark Clattenburg was wrongly sent out Fernando Torres in the game against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Italian believes the referee was harsh on defender Branislav Ivanovic.

He said: 'It's quite obvious in the eyes of everybody that the second yellow for Fernando wasn't one, it was a foul for us, he should have booked Evans and the decisive goal was offside. It's a shame the game has to be decided in that manner by the officials.

'Whatever [Ferguson] says, it was a foul in our favour and Fernando put the ball between Evans's legs, was through and was kicked on the shin and went down. It's a foul and a booking for the other player, not for our player.

'We're massively disappointed that these key decisions were wrong it always seems to be in favour of the opposition and it's a massive disadvantage for us. At 2-2 we looked like the team that were probably going to win the game so it's a shame. It was a good game of football with two good teams and the officials ruined it.

'They are under a lot of pressure and they have to be able to deal with it. Key decisions have to be right for any team and you don't want the referees to be a big influence. Let the teams play a good game of football against each other. That's what everyone wants.'

Di Matteo: I want Ashley Cole to stay

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed rumour that Ashley Cole may leave the London side in January.

The Italian refused to mentioned the club that is interested in the defender.

He said: 'Yes I do absolutely, no doubt. There are on-going negotiations with the club and it's something he directly discusses with the club. I would like him to stay here. It's something they have to sort out between the two parties, and my wish is that he stays here.

'[Ashley] is a fit boy, he can play every game and still has many years in front of him. I would like him to stay here and be here with us.

'For me he is one of the best left-backs in the world and a great asset for the team and club. He is very good defensively, offensively he provides attacking options and his positional awareness is very good. He has experience, he is quick, has got stamina, he has everything.'

Oscar: I often try to position myself

Oscar says he scores most of his goals 'just outside the box'.

The midfielder, 21, reveals that he positions himself when on the field of play so as to score.

He said: 'The long-distance ones are the most common goals I have scored, rather than the close-range ones.

'I often try to position myself in the place I was for this last goal against Shakhtar, so that when someone passes the ball I am close enough - and I do score quite a few like this, but because my more usual position is just outside the box, that is where I score most of my goals from.'

RDM: Oscar and Hazard are talented

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo believes Oscar and Eden Hazard are 'talented'.

The Brazilian sensation, 21, who joined Chelsea in the summer is trying to adapt well to English football.

Di Matteo said: 'Oscar is talented but I don't forget he is still only 21, and so is Hazard, and we don't want to give them all the responsibility in the world. We cannot forget that even though they are important players for us and for their national teams too.

'They have come to a new country and a new league, and they are learning a new language and getting used to the high tempo English football.

'Oscar is playing all the games for his national team too and doing a lot of travelling, and you need to factor all those things in.'

Uefa penalise Napoli

SSC Napoli have been punished for improper conduct by fans, insufficient stadium organisation and non-respect of UEFA directives related to stadium security at their UEFA Europa League Group F match against Swedish opponents AIK on 20 September.

The Control and Disciplinary Body instructed Napoli not to sell tickets for sectors 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 23 and 24, as well as the sector for disabled spectators at the north end of the main stand (west stand) of the Stadio San Paolo, for their next UEFA Europa League game against FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on 8 November.

The Italian side will have to provide a report from an independent construction company which confirms, with photographic evidence, that the necessary repair work has been carried out and that the aforementioned stands meet all the relevant spectator safety standards. If such a report is presented, the ban on ticket sales could be suspended for a probationary period of five years.

The Control and Disciplinary Body has ordered Napoli to play one UEFA competition game behind closed doors, subject to a probationary period of five years. The Italian club have also been fined €150,000.

The Italian have three days from the dispatch of the reasoned decision to appeal against the decision.

Mancini: I am not frustrated

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says he is 'not frustrated about what people say'.

The Italian has been under fire after his 1-3 loss to Ajax in the Champions League.

But Mancini believes his side can still turn things around.

He said: 'I am not frustrated about what people say. It is not a problem for me. I have my own opinion about everything. Sometimes I make mistakes, like the players, like the owner, like everyone.

'But I work hard every day and when you work seriously, you don't have any problem about your job. You think we can go down after one defeat? I don't think so. We are strong enough for this. But, whilst it is not easy to win the Premier League, in order to stay on top for a long time, we need to work even harder than last year.'

Wenger: Results will come back

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says his side was not at their 'best' against
Norwich and Schalke 04.

The Frenchman said: 'I feel in both games that, physically, we were not at our best, not at our sharpest. Hopefully we can get over that.

'It works a bit in cycles sometimes; you have one game where you are a bit sharper and one where you are a bit more laboured.

'We have gone through that now but it is important that these two results don't affect the confidence of the team. We must come back and focus on the way we want to play football.

'We had a very promising start. We have hit the wall a little bit in the last two games but we have just to focus again on the quality of our play, the way we want to play and not concentrate too much on who we play against.

'With the quality we have, the results will come back and I believe that this team wants to do very well.'

Bruno Metsu resigns appointment with Al Wasl

Coach Bruno Metsu has resigned his appointment as manager of Dubai-based club Al Wasl after being diagnosed with stomach cancer, according to local media.

The former Senegal and United Arab Emirates replaced Diego Maradona as coach of the Emirates side in July with a year still left on the former Argentina World Cup winner's contract.

The 58-year-old Frenchman, who took Senegal to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup, has been discharged of his duties after the club accepted his request to leave.

According to Gulf News, the Al Wasl board showed their appreciation in a statement for 'all he has given during his time spent managing Al Wasl. We wish him a speedy recovery and send him our best wishes.'

Metsu's assistant Gilles Morisseau will step in as caretaker manager.

Napoli charged with match fixing

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is set to open disciplinary proceedings relating to match-fixing at Napoli.

The 1-0 loss to Sampdoria on the final day of the 2009-10 season is coming under scrutiny.

Napoli former goalkeeper Matteo Gianello and ex-coach Silvio Giusti are to appear before a FIGC disciplinary committee.

Napoli defenders Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava have also been charged for failing to report the alleged match fixing.

A statement on FIGC's official website read: 'The FIGC can confirm that, following an investigation by the public prosecutor of Naples, the federal prosecutor will open disciplinary proceedings in relation to the Sampdoria-Napoli match of 16 May, 2010.

'Matteo Gianello, Napoli's former player, and Silvio Giusti, Napoli's former coach, are accused of violating Article 7 (sections 1, 2 and 5) of the sporting code of justice.

'Between them, they are accused of attempting to alter the outcome of the match to secure a victory for Sampdoria in exchange for money.

'(They are) also accused of having approached colleagues Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava, from whom they received a refusal.'

Berlusconi bags jail term for tax fraud

AC Milan owner and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to jail and barred from office after being found guilty of tax fraud.

The Milan court sentenced him to four years imprisonment but later reduced to one year because of an amnesty law.

The AC Milan owner, 76, said the sentence is 'intolerable judicial harassment'. He will remain free pending appeals.

He and others were accused of buying US film rights at inflated prices via two offshore companies under his control.

It is the first time Mr Berlusconi has been convicted of any crime concerning his business activities despite several trials.

He has in the past either been cleared, or cases have run beyond the judicial time limit.

Both the jail term and the ban would only take effect if the sentence is upheld by a higher court, according to Italian news agency Ansa.

Mr Berlusconi said on Italia 1: 'It is a political, incredible and intolerable judgement.

'It is without any doubt a political verdict just as all the cases invented against me are political.'

Eriksen: We found more space between their lines

Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen says the victory against Manchester City makes him 'feel great'.

The midfielder believes the game at Etihad Stadium in a fortnight will be 'difficult'.

He said: 'It feels great. Manchester City played a different game to Madrid, less zonally, and that was better for our playing philosophy. We were able to find more space between their lines and made good use of that. Unfortunately we went to sleep for ten seconds and conceded a goal, but we'd got a boost because we started so well, and luckily we equalised before half-time. That made the second half easier.

'When we went 3-1 up I have to admit that it went through my head we were also 3-1 ahead at the weekend [against Heracles Almelo] and ended up drawing 3-3, but I think we all felt that we wouldn't let that happen again.

'There was an element of luck in my goal, but you have to make your own luck in matches. It will be more difficult in Manchester in two weeks – they now know how we play – but we'll be ready, and we're really looking forward to it.'

Chelsea dismiss Terry's move

Chelsea dismissed claims they are negotiating the sale of captain John Terry with Valencia as 'nonsense'.

Spanish agent Francois Gallardo claimed on Thursday morning that Terry was considering a switch to Valencia after deciding to leave the Stamford Bridge side.

In an interview with Radio Intereconomia, Gallardo said: 'Valencia are negotiating, and I am involved in person.

'The offer is on his table. The player is out of contract in June and will not renew there for several reasons at Chelsea and he wants to come to Spain.

'He asked to leave. It's real. This has been going on for 15 days and two meetings have already took place. I think he will accept.'

Chelsea have dismissed the move through a statement. A club spokesman told Press Association Sport that the story was 'nonsense.'

Terry, who has 18 months left on his deal at Stamford Bridge, is currently serving a four-match ban for racially abusing QPR Anton Ferdinand.

The former England captain has played for the London club throughout his professional career.

Alonso: We lost to a good opponent

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso believes his side lost to 'good opponent in front of an amazing crowd'.

The midfielder said: 'We came here expecting an even contest. Dortmund have enjoyed a lot of success in Germany over the past couple of seasons.

'Both teams had chances to win the match. I think a draw would probably have been a fair result, but Dortmund worked very hard to their win. They played very well at both ends of the pitch and got that little bit of luck for their second goal.

'We've lost tonight, but there's still everything to play for in this group. We lost against a very good opponent in front of an amazing crowd and that just gives us more motivation to win the next match.'

Jovanović: We gave good advert of Belgian football

RSC Anderlecht Milan Jovanović believes his side gave a 'good advert' of Belgian football despite losing 1-2 to FC Zenit St Petersburg in Champions League Group C clash.

The midfielder said: 'Sometimes in football you put in maximum effort, but get nothing in return. The way we played was a good advert for Belgian football and Anderlecht. This was our best game in this year's UEFA Champions League and we will try and win in Brussels and claim third place in the group.

'We are from Belgium but there is a lot of pressure on us because people expect a lot. We played really well and deserved more from the game – a point is the least we deserved. At the highest level there is not a great difference between teams.'

C. Ronaldo: Dortmund were a bit lucky

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo believes Dortmund were a 'bit lucky' in their Champions League game on Wednesday night. The German side defeated Madrid 2-1 in a highly interesting game.

The Portuguese siad: 'We expected a tough game and Dortmund certainly made sure of that. They were a bit lucky with the second goal, but it's no reason for us to panic. We've still got several games to get the points we need.

'It's always 50-50 when two great teams play against one another and tonight we were on the losing side. Losing is part and parcel of football. Both teams have some very good attacking players, we saw that much today. I'm sure it was a great match for the fans, less so for us.'

Kehl: We have earned some deserved respect

Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Kehl says his side have 'earned some deserved respect' in the Champions League by beating La Liga champions Real Madrid CF 2-1 on Wednesday night.

'We knew we had it in us to beat Real Madrid. It was always going to be tough, but I think we've earned some deserved respect in the Champions League now. It feels good to be top of a group like this but ultimately we haven't achieved anything yet. We still need a few more points but I'm confident we'll get them.

'It's not every day you beat Real Madrid, so obviously the excitement among the crowd was huge. That said, there's always a great atmosphere in Dortmund so I wouldn't want to single this game out in that respect.

'I just found out I was man of the match and although it's nice to hear, it's not that important to me personally. The important thing was we got the win and everyone contributed to a much-improved performance.'

Mancini blames self for City's defeat

Manchester City manager says his side will need a miracle to progress to the next round of the Champions League.

The English champions were beaten 3-1 by Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA on Wednesday night.

Borussia Dortmund top Group D with seven points after beating Real Madrid 2-1, who have six points, in Wednesday night's other match.

Mancini's City now lie at the bottom of the table with one point while Ajax are on three and are favourites to qualify for the Europa League after Christmas.

The manager said: 'It is my fault. I didn't prepare well for the game and I take the blame.

'I thought in one way and it was different. When you prepare in one way and it is a different game, it is difficult.

'We had more chances to score and in the Champions League you need to score. It is my fault, I repeat.

'It is very difficult to qualify now. It would be a miracle.

'We changed for five minutes to three at the back, but we always have 11 players. I don't think that is important - three, four, five, six or seven defenders.

'If someone wants that as an excuse then okay, but it's not the reason.'

Stramaccioni: We respect Partizan

Inter Milan caoch Andrea Stramaccioni believes his side can progress in their Europa League campaign.

Inter will play host to Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night.

The Nerazzurri coach: 'We'll approach the game with a hungry side who will take our opponents seriously. We're expecting a team in rude health, who are top of their league

with 8 wins and just one defeat, which came right at the start of the season.

They've got talented young players. We respect Partizan, we know it'll be a tough game.

'We're working well at the moment, we saw that on Sunday. We're relaxed and keeping our feet on the ground. We have it in our minds to work hard and improve game by game without taking any notice of the league table or our aims, which
could distract us from our main goal which is hard graft.'

Bould: We looked jaded against Schalke

Arsenal assistant coach Steve Bould has attributed his side's 0-2 loss to Schalke at the Emirates Stadium to lack of confidence.

Bould said: 'We haven't played anything like we can, I think that's the big disappointment. We haven't performed today. We lack a bit of confidence, for whatever reason, but it's a tough competition and they (Schalke) are a good side in all fairness. They beat Dortmund at the weekend and played really well. A 0-0 would have delighted us I think.

'We looked jaded, I don't know why that is. Coming off the international break we haven't performed really. I don't know if that's the reason but we definitely look jaded.

'With the ball we lack a bit of confidence. We normally create chances and at the moment we're not, so we have to correct that.

We've got nine points to play for. Wherever we get those points [we need] from, it doesn't matter. I'm sure we're perform a lot better next time.'

Heynckes: We did not play well

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes says his side did not 'play well' against Lille.

The German club managed to win their third Champions League game of the season by lone goal.

Heynckes said: 'We have to win such games as well. It was a rough hard-earned victory because we did not play well. But you also need to see the team fight and at the end we deserved to win.

'You could feel there was not much joy in our game and not much running. So sometimes you just have to be satisfied with such a performance because it is equally important to win a game like that.'

Soldado: The key was the first goal

Valencia forward Roberto Soldado believes his first goal against BATE was 'key' to his hat-trick.

'It was not an easy game. The key was the first goal, as after that BATE had to open up and we had more space.

'We started very well from the first minute, because we were very focused on doing our job. The next game will be the most important one of the first half of our season as a win could drive us into the knockout phase, and we will try to play the same way we did today.

'We knew Bayern lost here despite being superior in terms of possesion, but it is more important not to lose the ball because BATE are very quick in hitting back.'

Senegal sack coach after Nations Cup ouster

Senegal Football Federation have sacked coach Joseph Koto after their failure to qualify for the African Nations Cup finals in South Africa.

The decision was taken on Tuesday at a board meeting to discuss the rioting that led to the abandonment of their final round, second leg qualifier against the Ivory Coast this month.

The federation said: 'Koto has been removed because targets were not achieved.'

Koto who has been acting coach since Amara Traore was sacked in February after a disastrous 2012 African Nations Cup finals for Senegal. His appointment was confirmed in July.

The Teranga Lions were trailing 2-0 in Dakar when home supporters caused the abandonment of the match by throwing missiles on to the pitch and lighting small fires in the stands.

The team were on their way out of the 2013 competition after being outplayed, 2-6 down on aggregate when play stopped. They have since been formally disqualified.

Darijo Srna: It's a great win for us

Shakhtar defender Darijo Srna says the 2-1 win against Chelsea in on Tuesday was a 'great win'.

Srna said: 'Our supporters saw the real Shakhtar tonight. We looked much better than Chelsea in this game and it is a pity we did not manage to score more goals.

'Our players have grown in confidence this season so this victory was not accidental. It's a great win for us.'

Shakhtar are top of Group E with seven points from three matches, three ahead of Chelsea and four in front of Juventus who drew 1-1 at bottom club Nordsjaelland.
