Bruno Metsu resigns appointment with Al Wasl

Coach Bruno Metsu has resigned his appointment as manager of Dubai-based club Al Wasl after being diagnosed with stomach cancer, according to local media.

The former Senegal and United Arab Emirates replaced Diego Maradona as coach of the Emirates side in July with a year still left on the former Argentina World Cup winner's contract.

The 58-year-old Frenchman, who took Senegal to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup, has been discharged of his duties after the club accepted his request to leave.

According to Gulf News, the Al Wasl board showed their appreciation in a statement for 'all he has given during his time spent managing Al Wasl. We wish him a speedy recovery and send him our best wishes.'

Metsu's assistant Gilles Morisseau will step in as caretaker manager.
