Zenit sign Hulk and Axel Witsel

Zenit St Petersburg has completed the signing of Brazil forward Hulk from Porto in a transfer deal reportedly worth 40 million euros (£32m).

The 26-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Russian champions.

Hulk, less frequently known as Givanildo Vieira de Souza, was given his nickname because of his resemblance to the actor who played the Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno.

Zenit have also completed the signing, again on a five-year contract and for a similar transfer fee, of midfielder Axel Witsel, 23, from Benfica.

Witsel, capped 30 times by Belgium, began his career at Standard Liege.

Zenit, backed by Russian energy giant Gazprom, will hope Hulk and Witsel can at least see them through Group C of the Champions League, where they will line up against AC Milan, Anderlecht and Malaga, to the knock-out phase.

 Sept. 4, 2012.
